Getting in the Flow!

By Hero's Journey Academy

Our 1st Year, Session 6, Week 5

Musical Projects!

This week in MakerSpace the Eagles explored the wonders of music! They built instruments that could play a tune in different pitches. The learners even got interested in the guitar, so they looked up the chords and videos to try to play a song.

A learner plays a homemade straw flute in MakerSpace
Boy plays a small wind instrument beside a laptop and globe in a classroom MakerSpace
Girl in a white tank top plays a colorful homemade instrument in the MakerSpace classroom
A young learner in an LSU shirt holds a homemade instrument in the classroom
A learner sits on the floor playing a guitar in MakerSpace with charts and books nearby
Two learners in MakerSpace build cardboard instruments at a white table
A young boy builds a cardboard musical instrument at a table in MakerSpace
A smiling hero in a green Minecraft hoodie holds a cardboard instrument in MakerSpace
A learner sits on the floor playing a guitar beside papers, a laptop, and a small desk in MakerSpace

Setting Goals

Every Monday all the Eagles get together for their morning meeting to discuss their goals and work habits. Eagles set their goals for the day and anything that makes sense to schedule ahead for the week. Afterwards, they share one or two of their SMART goals with the group and receive feedback!-Is it SMART?SpecificMeasurableAchievableRealisticTimely**-Will it be in your challenge zone? How do you know it is?-Is it a stretch goal? How do you know it is?**

Four learners sit on a patterned rug, working together with a laptop and papers in a cozy classroom
A hero in a green shirt works on a laptop beside an open notebook at a desk
A young boy points at a laptop screen at a table in a classroom library area
Heroes sit on a rug in a circle during goal-setting time, with laptops and whiteboards around them
Three learners in green sit at a table writing goals during work time
A young learner sits at a small desk using a laptop and worksheet in a classroom
Four eagles lounge on beanbags reading in a classroom with goal-setting charts on the wall

Can we build it?

Since organization is the focus trait of the session, that will be the focus as critics. The Eagles learned about the sub-skills of organization:

  • Author’s introduction “hooks” the reader in an interesting way.
  • Author’s ideas are presented in a logical sequence.
  • The transitions show where the idea or story moves forward.
  • The organization of the whole piece feels natural, not forced.
  • The conclusion leaves the reader satisfied.

Which sub-skill do you think will be most challenging for you to give feedback on as a critic? Which do you think will be the easiest? Their call to action was to practice requesting thoughtful feedback and giving thoughtful feedback. The Eagles were challenged to build a box that will be used for our chickens soon! This required following instructions, teamwork, and learning to use the tools.

Four learners build a box together on a rug in a classroom
Three learners work together to build a box in the classroom while a guide watches
Four children and a guide gather around a box-building project in the classroom

We are nearing the end!

The Eagles have been practicing their fingerprinting, handwriting, and footprint analysis for their final detective in training assignment to get their Detective badge! Exhibition prep started this week and they are starting early because it is very elaborate. The Exhibition is a gathering of the community at the end of each session, to experience demonstrations of work and learning by the Eagles. Each session there will be a different exhibition, so that by the end of the year, parents will have seen many different aspects of the learning that occurs at Active Leadership Academy. For this quest, the Exhibition will be a crime-scene simulation written and set up by the Eagles for their parents.

Two learners work on laptops at a white table in a classroom
A girl stands by a boy working at a laptop in a classroom with shelves and mirrors
Two learners examine a paper and small card at a table during an exhibition
Eagles huddle around a wall display and floor setup during an exhibition
Two girls stand at a table with a white bottle in a classroom
A hero in a purple shirt uses a magnifying glass over papers and evidence in a crime-scene simulation
Children and a guide work at a table with blue boxes and tools during a crime-scene simulation
