Gimme Shelter

By Hero's Journey Academy

Our 1st Year, Session 5, Week 3

Gimme Shelter!

Our Eagles have been working on building shelters in preparation for the exhibition camping trip to test their skills! They have studied the history of shelters as well as lots of experimentation with building their own!

Three children work together to lash bamboo poles into a shelter frame outdoors
Two children outdoors building a teepee-style shelter from bamboo poles

Pitching a Tent!

It took them a lot of trial and error, but they managed to successfully setup their tents in preparation for the upcoming survival exhibition challenge!

Children pitch a tent tarp on the grass beside a fence during shelter-building practice
Three children stand around a tent on a grassy field
Children pitch a large orange-and-gray tent outdoors beside a chain-link fence
Two children sit inside a pitched tent during shelter-building practice
Four children and a guide stand beside a pitched tent in a field

PE Challenge!

PE this week has mostly been about setting fitness goals and achieving them - but that doesn’t stop us from having Yoga fun with fitness balls!

Heroes practice yoga poses in a classroom with a guide and fitness balls
Children in a classroom play with large exercise balls during a fitness activity
Children in a classroom play with large exercise balls near tables and a rug
Learners in a classroom balance on exercise balls during PE

Challenge Donut!

Everyday eagles ask themselves if the goals they are setting are in their comfort zone, challenge zone, or panic zone. They encourage each other, discuss, and reflect on their choices made on their own unique hero’s journey.

Two learners work on laptops and papers at a table in a classroom
Eagles sit in beanbag chairs and work on laptops beside a large wall display

Studying Julius Caesar in Civilization

Why do empires rise and fall? What decisions would you make if you were put in Julius Caesar’s shoes? Who was more selfish Caesar or the Senate? Is it ever ethical for leaders of modern nations to be assassinated, or should they always be allowed their day in court just like civilians? These are the types of socratic discussions our Eagles have in Civilization - and they LOVE it. They began studying the earliest hunter/gather nomads at the beginning of the year and we have now worked our way up to the Roman Empire.
