Investigating and Debating

By Hero's Journey Academy

Session 6 Week 1 Year 5

We started session six this week and the learners have been very engaged in our new Detective Science quest! They are also excited to show off their electricity skills at the big awards exhibition on February 27th at 6pm. Both studios have been practicing circuitry under a time limit and hope to give the audience an exciting show!

Quest

We began our Detective Science quest and will spend six weeks learning about forensics techniques used to solve crimes! Our quest began with a mystery that the ES learners are trying to solve. They got to explore a crime scene and collect evidence. Next they took their own fingerprints and compared them to ones found at the scene. At the end of the week they learned about handwriting analysis and compared several writing samples to the one found at the crime scene. The heroes are loving this quest and are so excited to find out the culprit!

ES Comms

This week in comms, our heroes learned about formal debates. They will spend the next few weeks preparing to debate a game at exhibition! Each hero picked a game and a person in the studio to go against in a formal debate. They began coming up with their arguments for why the one they chose is better than their opponents and will move on to rebuttals next week.

Cooking

Mrs. Molley led the heroes in cooking Costa Rican chorreadas this week! They are pancakes that are made from ground corn. Chorreadas can be eaten sweet or savory depending on the toppings. Our learners tried them with honey!

Art

In art, the learners were able to create a free-style mixed medium masterpiece inspired by the landscapes of Costa Rica! They watched a video on the country which showed its rich rainforests, beautiful beaches, and captivating waterfalls. Some of our heroes were inspired by the scenery while others created artwork based on the wildlife.
