This Parent Guide explains how our school works and helps families decide whether to schedule a tour.

Most parents know that traditional school isn’t working—but only a few dare to seek a better way. You’re here because you want something different for your child. You know there’s more to education than sitting still in rows of desks, checking boxes, doing homework, and taking tests.

You want them to thrive—not just survive the school system.

Our Story: Why We Created Hero’s Journey Academy

For over 25 years, our family has worked closely with children and families in Ascension Parish through martial arts, afterschool, and summer programs. That long-term work shaped how we understand kids — not as test scores or behaviors to manage, but as capable people who grow through challenge, discipline, and real responsibility.

Like you, we wanted to provide the best possible learning environment for our children that would spark their natural curiosity, inspire them to be lifelong learners, challenge them to grow in character, and equip them to be leaders that will change the world.

After experiencing the limits of traditional education—public school, private school, and homeschool—we realized that none of them fit our vision of what learning could be.

I remember sitting in a classroom, confined to a desk, memorizing facts for tests—facts that faded as quickly as they were learned—and feeling my sense of wonder slip away.

When I became a parent, I knew I didn’t want that experience repeated for my children.

As we continued searching for a model that matched what we believed — and what we had seen work with children over time — we discovered Acton Academy.

Acton Academy is a global network of learner-driven schools built around the belief that children are far more capable than we often assume. The model blends hands-on exploration, self-paced mastery, and strong accountability.

But life was busy, and we put it off—until 2020 turned the world upside down. That’s when we decided to stop waiting and open the school our children deserved.

Today, Hero’s Journey Academy has grown into a place where children are trusted to show up as their full selves — curious, capable, imperfect, and growing.

A place where character matters.

Where effort, honesty, and follow-through are celebrated.

Where children are given real responsibility — and supported as they learn how to carry it.

A place where learning feels meaningful, responsibility is real, and — as many parents tell us — children wake up on Saturdays disappointed that there is no school.

As parents often tell us, it’s the school they wish they had gone to.

The Hero’s Journey Approach

Your child isn’t just a student—they’re the hero of their own story, embarking on an adventure filled with challenges, allies, and guides.

At Hero’s Journey Academy, we guide learners to discover their unique gifts and use them to solve challenging problems. Learners here develop real-world skills, build character, and grow into bold, independent thinkers ready to lead.

Learner-driven doesn’t mean unstructured or unsupervised. It means learners take ownership of their goals and work within clear expectations, with guides providing guardrails and support rather than constant direction. Guides don’t give answers — they help learners discover them.

This doesn’t mean chaos or neglect — structure, accountability, and high expectations are part of daily life here.

What Makes Hero’s Journey Academy Unique

Learning with Real Responsibility.

True education doesn’t fill children with facts; it invites them to discover meaningful truths for themselves. Each day, learners set goals, track progress, and reflect on achievements—developing the self-discipline and confidence to lead their own growth.

No homework. No busywork. Just meaningful work.

Our studios are dynamic spaces where learners take ownership of their work, collaborate with others, and engage in work that feels purposeful rather than performative.

Mastery, not grades.

Instead of grades and report cards, learners showcase their work in public exhibitions—presenting to peers, families, and the community. These experiences build real-world communication skills, confidence, and the ability to receive and act on constructive feedback.

Learning happens in community.

In mixed-age studios, younger learners are inspired by older peers, while older learners grow as leaders by mentoring others. This collaborative model fosters accountability, independence, and a growth mindset, allowing learners to thrive at their own pace—mastering the core skills of reading, writing, and math with adaptive learning tools and hands-on challenges.

Learning How to Think.

Guides don’t lecture or give easy answers. Instead, they use the Socratic Method — asking thoughtful questions that help learners think deeply, solve problems, and articulate their ideas clearly. This approach builds independent thinkers who learn how to reason, communicate, and take ownership of their thinking rather than rely on constant adult direction.

Peer-Led Studios.

Learners help create studio rules, accountability systems, and even resolve conflicts, experiencing leadership in action. Age-appropriate freedoms balanced with clear boundaries help them grow in independence and self-regulation.

Learning connects to the real world.

Through entrepreneurial projects—like launching businesses at our annual Ascension Children’s Business Fair—learners gain hands-on experience that builds confidence, creativity, and a sense of agency.

Biology Isn’t in a Book—It’s in the World Around Us

Our learners spend as much time as possible outside, cultivating a deep respect for the natural world. By planting gardens, exploring ecosystems, and observing wildlife, they develop a sense of connection—learning from life, not just about it.

Is Hero’s Journey Academy right for my child?

We understand, choosing a bold, unconventional path can feel uncertain at first.

Our school is a perfect fit for families who:

  • Value independence, ownership, and personal responsibility.
  • Believe children grow through challenge, effort, and follow-through.
  • Want children to develop confidence by doing real things, not just being told what to do.
  • Prefer meaningful work over busywork.
  • Are comfortable with structure that allows for choice, exploration, and learner ownership.
  • Value flexibility and prioritize family time alongside meaningful learning.

This environment is not a good fit for families who:

  • Prioritize external markers of success — such as prestige, rankings, or comparison — over personal growth and character development.
  • Those who aren't sure their child is ready yet for the responsibility and struggles—and occasional tears—of truly independent learning (and may be right).
  • Are unwilling to engage in the journey of growth alongside their child.

Our community works best for families who take shared responsibility for growth and learning, rather than placing blame on systems, teachers, or circumstances.
