At ALA learning is FUN!

Year 4, Session 1, Week 2

Who says learning can’t be fun?! Our heroes have had a blast this week exploring art, dinosaurs, poetry, and teamwork. Leadership skills are emerging and their communication as a tribe gets better each day!

‍

‍Quest - “Build the Tribe”

We continued creating a positive culture in our tribe through team building games. One game required everyone to form a line and hold hands. They had to pass a hula hoop down the line without letting each other's hands go. The second game was completed in teams. Each group had to lift a hula hoop with just their index fingers. The hoop had to stay level the entire time and everyone on the team had to be touching it. These activities fostered communication, patience, and strategizing as a team. All of our learners were able to successfully complete the challenges!

Writer’s Workshop - Poetry

In Writer’s Workshop, ES dove into haikus and free verse poetry. We read “If Not for the Cat” by Jack Prelutsky and made a game out of guessing the animal he was describing in his haikus. They began drafting their haiku and free verse poems for exhibition. After, we gathered in a circle to share their initial drafts and offer peer critique.

‍

Art - Henri Matisse

During art, all learners listened to a read aloud of the book “Henri’s Scissors” depicting the life of artist Henri Matisse. We observed several examples of his work, and then our heroes created their own masterpieces in his paper cut-out style.

‍

PE

To beat the heat, we held the first half of PE inside and the remainder outside first thing in the morning. Inside, they played games of “Statues” and “Duck Duck Goose”. Outside time was dedicated to free play with the majority electing to play basketball. There was a dance party in the shade and sidewalk chalk for when someone needed a break.

Little Hero’s Studio

The Little Heroes eagerly jumped into their Montessori based work this week. By Friday, several came into school and immediately pulled their work off of the shelf without being prompted! They have been focusing on handwriting and are having fun exploring the alphabet through dinosaurs. Additionally, they practiced fine motor skills through safely cutting bananas and boiled eggs. Our older learners are mentoring the Little Heroes by checking the quality of their work. They offer feedback and encourage them to do their best!
