Continuing to Build the Tribe, One Day at a Time!

Year 4, Session 1, Week 4

A week of leadership and tasty treats! Our heroes practiced leading their own circles and holding each other accountable. They made s’mores and bread pudding to share in the afternoons. Most importantly they had a lot of FUN building their tribe!

Building the Tribe

‍

This week the elementary school learners worked on building their tribe through playing board games and stepping up as leaders for the little heroes. They invited a little hero to participate in morning launches for the week and quest time. ES explained the rules of engagement during circle time and modeled how to hold a socratic discussion. In quest, they taught a little hero how to play the game of Life and gave them a character call out for cleaning up the game!

‍

‍

Older and younger heroes both led circle time in the Little Hero studio. They read books to the group, and held each other accountable for sitting and acting appropriately.

‍

‍

Both studios worked together on creating “tribal artwork” that was inspired by traditional tribal patterns and symbols. They used a texture and layering technique that began with designs drawn in thick crayon strokes. Next, they applied watercolor paint and blended it. This method allows the crayon to stand out on top of the paint. The artwork has been mounted to a background with decorative string and is ready for display at exhibition!

As the tribe gets more comfortable with each other their conflict resolution skills become very important. New challenges arise daily and it can be hard to navigate them if it involves a close friend. In the Little Heroes studio they use the peace rose when settling disagreements. The ES have a conflict resolution discussion with a script that prompts them to explain how they feel when someone else hasn’t upheld the studio contract. They are learning how to hold others accountable even when it is difficult, and also practicing how to respond appropriately when someone else is holding them accountable.

‍

‍

On Wednesday, everyone enjoyed playing on the new climbing dome outside. It was hot so they wrapped up the day with popsicles!

‍

‍

On Thursday, the Little Heroes baked bread pudding using leftover donuts from the kitchen. They shared the treat with the elementary studio and enjoyed a nice snack outside!

‍

‍

Vaughn brought his microscope to share with his peers. We love when our heroes share learning experiences with the group!

‍

‍

Friday, the ES studio had a competition to see who could be caught demonstrating the most leadership skills. They had to write a character callout when they observed a peer demonstrating leadership skills and pin it to the whiteboard. The person with the most character callouts received a prize, but the person who affirmed the most peers also received a prize! Congratulations to Harper for demonstrating the most leadership skills and to Kain for positively recognizing the most heroes.

‍

‍

For “Fun Friday” free time, all Little Heroes and every ES freedom level 2+ got to enjoy s'mores! It was a great way to wrap up the week!
