Session 1 Week 2 Year 5
This week was all about challenges that promoted growth and opportunities! Our heroes were tasked for one day to use nothing but sign language, writing, or mouthing to communicate. They learned about how difficult it is for members of the community who can’t communicate verbally to get their thoughts across and had to get creative. Everyone who successfully completed this challenge received Chic-fil-A on Friday!
In the Elementary Studio, after a Socratic discussion on good vs. bad teamwork, the learners participated in an additional game. They were each given 1 Hero Buck and 1 Little Hero Point that they could not keep for themselves, but had to award to another hero who they observed demonstrating good teamwork skills. When they gave the reward they announced it with a character call out. Congratulations to Charlie, Aubri, Tucker, Gypsy, Zoey, Isabelle, and Leah who were observed helping the tribe!
Little Hero Studio
The Little Heroes continued to learn about Moroccan culture and discussed how they drink a lot of tea. They had a circle where they got to feel and smell the dry tea and then taste it in liquid form. The tea was a fun blue color for the blue moon! Afterwards, the learners worked on their gratitude journals.
Quest
On Tuesday, the ES heroes played a teamwork game where one person had to guide their blindfolded partner verbally to find tennis balls around the dojang and put them in a basket. Afterwards, we had a discussion on what made this game challenging and what could’ve improved the teamwork. They created squad shirts and a tribal flag on Wednesday during quest time. They learned about the symbolism of flags, and looked at examples of flags from around the world, before coming together to design their own as a tribe. On Friday, we discussed the “decision chain” which can help you make a decision when you are stuck between two choices. Afterwards, they were able to practice two other ways to make decisions - “trial and error” and the “question funnel” - by playing the games Memory, Roborush, and Guess Who.
ES Comms
This week we focused on what makes a quality birthday note! The heroes learned a recipe for writing a sincere birthday card and looked at several models of strong and poor writing. Afterwards, they wrote a practice birthday card for “Sammy” the imaginary bear from our launch. On Thursday, we discussed what warm and cool feedback is and then the learners partnered up to give peer critiques on Tuesday’s work. After receiving feedback, the ES heroes revised their card to create a final product for exhibition.
Art
This week we learned about still life art! We used Mrs. Gigi’s Moroccan tea set and fruit as the scene to sketch on paper. Then the heroes used color pencils to bring the pictures to life!
Cooking
We continued studying Morocco this week and Mrs. Molley led the heroes in cooking Moroccan pancakes with cinnamon oranges. They mixed the batter, sprinkled cinnamon sugar on the oranges, and drizzled butter and honey on the pancakes.
PE
Our first half of PE was in the dojang and consisted of an obstacle course and games. The second half of PE was outside and the learners played basketball, hula hoops, and jump rope!
Fun Friday
For Fun Friday our heroes watched “Zootopia” and then played outside or with board games!
ES Hero of the Week
The Elementary Studio voted Charlie hero of the week! Congratulations Charlie!
