Session 1 Week 5 and Session 2 Week 1, Year 5
The heroes began tackling exhibition prep before hurricane Francine hit. The storm postponed exhibition but our learners didn’t let that rattle them. They remained laser focused and worked hard to organize a great display of their work from session one!
Quest
The ES heroes spent quest time with exhibition prep for the first half of the week and then began their Session 2 E-Ship business quest. They started their entrepreneurship journey making an “e-ship” by decorating a paper ship that will track their progress on the quest map. Next, they began to think about what business they would like to create for the Children’s Business Fair at the end of the session. They began researching their ideas and surveying the market for their products.
ES Comms
This week in comms, we practiced a recipe for successful conflict resolutions and giving sincere apologies. We role played different scenarios involving conflicts and gave each other feedback on how we used the template to resolve it. Mrs. Tanksley overheard the heroes using what they practiced during a conflict resolution later in the week!
Civilization
In the Elementary Studio we study history by reading one chapter at a time in our book and having a socratic discussion. This year we are reading Ancient Times: Volume 1 and began discussing the earliest nomads. We then moved on to the first civilizations in Egypt and the beginnings of writing.
Art
To go along with our exploration of Thailand we painted a golden Bodhi tree on canvas! The learners did this art project in stages. First they painted the background black with a red circle. The following day they sketched their tree using white colored pencil. The final stage was to paint the tree gold with acrylic paint.
PE
The older heroes set up a fun obstacle course with varying levels of difficulty for everyone to participate in during PE. Afterwards, every learner took turns leading a pose in yoga to some relaxing music.
Cooking
This week we are learning about Thailand and the learners cooked Thai lettuce wraps! Mrs. Molley set out all of the ingredients with labels for the heroes to be able to smell and experience individually. Then they each helped mix in the ingredients and assemble the lettuce wraps. A couple of heroes were hesitant to try something out of their comfort zone, but with the encouragement of their peers they tasted a few bites! We called that bravery and the group awarded them a bonus hero buck!
Fun Friday
Thank you to our Little Hero Annabeth’s grandmother Ms. Elizabeth for coming to teach the learners how to make Thai coconut ice cream (without appliances) during Fun Friday free time!
