Session 5 Week 4 Year 5
We may have missed a week of school due to the snow days, but we dove right back into our routine this week! Our heroes were excited to come back to see their friends and get back to having fun while learning.
Quest
On Monday, the ES heroes made a homemade battery using washers, pennies, coffee filters soaked in salty water, and then tested the voltage. On Tuesday, they worked hard at trying to create an electromagnet using wire, a battery, tape, and an iron nail. They also explored electrical engineering as a calling by watching videos of famous heroes in the field, and taking a trip to RPCC to see how others are turning what they are learning in quest into a career.
Art
The heroes watched a video about an artist who beautifies the streets of Uruguay with murals on the sides of buildings. They were challenged with imagining they were creating their own mural that would be seen by people in the city. The learners drew on paper what they would want their mural to look like and then shaded it in with colored pencils.
ES Field Trip
The ES heroes took a field trip to see Mr. David Molley at RPCC’s electrical and instrumentation lab. They got to tour the technical college, meet several members of the staff, and operate various equipment. The learners had so much fun exploring real life applications of the things they are working on in quest. A few heroes said this was the best field trip they have ever been on so thank you to everyone at RPCC for a great experience!
Parent Coffee
We love having the parents observe our morning launches and enjoy coffee with us on Thursdays! This week Ms. Gigi’s launch was on kindness and Mr. Molley made a guest appearance to lead a launch about taking exhibitions to the next level!
Cooking
Mrs. Molley led the heroes in making a chocolate salami which is a dessert commonly eaten in Uruguay. The learners mixed together butter, milk, cookies, nuts, cocoa, dried cranberries and chocolate chips. Next they rolled the dough into a log shape and put it in the refrigerator for several hours to harden. Afterwards, they dusted the top with powdered sugar and cut the chocolate salami into slices to enjoy. Many of the heroes were surprised at how delicious they thought this dessert was!
Fun Friday
For Fun Friday, our heroes earned time to watch a movie - Big Hero 6! This move ties into our electrical engineering quest and also relates to the hero’s journey!
Happy Birthday
A big birthday shout out to Will! We hope you had the best 7th birthday ever!
