We had a fabulous first week of school and our heroes are already establishing routines. The learners experienced both fun and hard work as they got to know each other and their studio. We are confident that they have laid the foundation for what will be an AMAZING school year!
One of the top questions we are asked by parents when touring our private school in Gonzales, LA is "what curriculum do you use?" While we utilize Montessori elements and the latest in game-based adaptive software, the "curriculum" at Hero’s Journey: An Acton Academy can seem confusing; especially when learners are allowed to work at their own pace on core skills programs and our real world projects look nothing like traditional subjects that fit nicely into a textbook.
This week the heroes are wrapping up all of their projects in preparation for the exhibition next Thursday. We also gained a new hero in the Elementary Studio - welcome Adley, we are so excited that you will be joining us next year!
This week our heroes focused on finding “flow” and holding each other accountable to ensure they were getting the most out of their core skills’ time. We had great discussions about distraction monsters, multi-tasking, and the quality of work produced. The learners are working hard to meet all of their badge plan goals by the end of the year.
This was a fun filled week of exploring new things! We went on a field trip and started the Growing Curiosity quest. This will be the last quest of the school year. We are also able to finally start harvesting some things from our gardens! Our learners have been eating strawberries and mint, and will soon be able to pick tomatoes as well.
Working hard and having fun is what our heroes do everyday! Both studios dived into their creativity this week through art, writing, reading, and playing games. Our learners are proud of the things they create and can’t wait to show their parents at pick up time!
We have reached the last session of the year and summer break is rapidly approaching! The weather caused us to miss Wednesday, but we didn’t let that slow down our productivity. We even had two new heroes join us - welcome to Aubri and Leah!
That’s a wrap on Session 6 and we are rolling into the last session of the year! Our heroes have worked hard in core skills and are aiming to meet those end of the year badge plan goals. We covered topics such as plant cells, the life cycle of a butterfly, and how to write a gratitude letter. We got our hands dirty planting a garden in the back of the school, but also through painting like Monet in art. Our learners are so excited to see what the next session brings!
